What Is Morse Code?
Morse code represents text characters with short and long signals, conventionally written as dots and dashes and heard as dits and dahs. The International Telecommunication Union maintains the current International Morse code recommendation.
It is an encoding system, not a language: it can represent letters, numerals, punctuation, and procedural signals. For example, E is one dot and T is one dash.
That simple two-state design makes it usable over a telegraph key, a radio carrier, a light, or a switch input. The receiving person must still know the language being encoded.
A Brief History of Morse Code
The morse code history begins in the 1830s. Samuel Morse, an American painter and inventor, alongside his assistant Alfred Vail, developed the electrical telegraph.
