Tap Code Translator

Convert text into the covert Tap Code, a simple grid-based cipher used famously by prisoners of war.

How Tap Code Works

Unlike Morse code, which requires an understanding of "dots" and "dashes" (short and long signals), Tap Code requires only a single type of signal: a simple tap. It is based on a structured 5×5 Polybius square.

The Grid Coordinates

To communicate a letter, you first tap out the row number, pause, and then tap out the column number. Because a 5x5 grid only holds 25 letters, the letter 'K' is typically replaced by 'C'.

For example, to say "HI":
H is Row 2, Column 3 (Tap-Tap ... pause ... Tap-Tap-Tap)
I is Row 2, Column 4 (Tap-Tap ... pause ... Tap-Tap-Tap-Tap)
